About the Destination

Kharpocho Fort – The Crown of Skardu

Perched high above Skardu city on a rocky hill overlooking the Indus River, Kharpocho Fort is one of the most iconic historical landmarks in Gilgit-Baltistan. Often referred to as the "King of Forts," Kharpocho offers visitors a fascinating journey into the history, culture, and heritage of Baltistan while providing some of the most spectacular panoramic views in the region.

History and Significance

Built during the 16th century by Ali Sher Khan Anchan, one of Baltistan's most renowned rulers, Kharpocho Fort served as the royal residence and military stronghold of the rulers of Skardu. Its strategic location allowed the rulers to monitor trade routes and defend the region from invading forces. For centuries, the fort played a vital role in the political and cultural history of Baltistan.

The name "Kharpocho" translates to "King of Forts" in the Balti language, reflecting its importance and commanding position above the valley. Although much of the original structure has weathered over time, the fort remains a powerful symbol of Baltistan's rich past.

Visitors can explore the historic ruins, ancient walls, and watchtowers while enjoying breathtaking views of Skardu city, the Indus River, Satpara Valley, and the surrounding mountains.
